Tottenham opened up the title race with victory over Chelsea earlier this week and their supporters here in the Transfer Tavern were absolutely delighted with the win!

In a result that showed grit, quality and determination, it was clear for everyone watching in the pub that Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain in the race for the title this season, even if they have to do it on the sly.

Of course, Chelsea remain in a very strong position indeed and are still five points clear but Antonio Conte’s willingness to admit the title-race could be a six-team affair shows how far we’ve still got to go this campaign.

But the form being shown by certain individuals in the current Spurs crop makes for promising viewing in a team that seem to be on the up once again after a tricky start to the campaign.

So, after a frank discussion with some of our Spurs regulars, here’s three reasons why Spurs could be real underdogs for the title this season…

Against Chelsea, Spurs looked the full package

We’ve seen some fantastic performances from the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool this season but this time, it was the turn of Spurs to really turn on the style during their win over Conte’s men.

They looked strong, composed and classy as they waltzed their way through the Blues back-line and everything pointed to a side that has what it takes to be there or thereabouts come the end of the campaign.

Spurs punters thought the performances of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli were particularly accomplished but even the likes of Victor Wanyama deserve praise for how they went about their business on the night.

Dele Alli remains one of the best players in the division

His days playing at MK Dons might only be a couple of years ago but there’s little doubting the player that Dele Alli has turned into during his time at Tottenham over the past couple of seasons.

Just as he was in the game against Watford, he was the star man against the Blues, scoring two headers either side of half time to give his team the win.

The young Englishman seems to have everything needed to be a star in his game. Skill, the ability to score from all over the pitch, endeavour and a good attitude.

Pochettino’s squad depth is impressive

Much was made of Liverpool’s squad depth after their slightly disappointing 2-2 draw with Sunderland this week but that couldn’t be said in the slightest of Pochettino’s Spurs.

He has a whole wealth of class available to bring on from the bench and in the game against Chelsea, being able to bring on the likes of Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Heung-Min Son showed just how much quality the Argentinian has in his side.

These are individuals that would walk into most sides in the division and to have them ready and waiting on the bench is nothing but a good thing.
