Liverpool supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side concede a late equaliser to end up drawing 1-1 with Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Toffees off the back of three successive victories in all competitions, including a 7-0 thrashing of Spartak Moscow in midweek to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. And they looked set for another crucial three points on Sunday as Mohamed Salah gave them the lead at half time, only for defender Dejan Lovren to clumsily foul Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the area 13 minutes from time, from which Wayne Rooney stepped up to slot home the resulting spot-kick to preserve a point for Sam Allardyce’s side.

Subsequently, there have been many deflated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few hours, many of whom haven’t seen their mood improve greatly recently either given recent reports surrounding the future of influential ace Philippe Coutinho.

The 25-year-old was subject of several big money bids from Barcelona during the summer, only for Liverpool to stand firm and reject the lot, yet recent reports suggest that the Reds would be willing to accept an offer of around £120 million for the Brazil international.

And were Barca to indeed launch an offer of that magnitude, here are THREE stars manager Klopp must look to land in January from the £120 million gained from Coutinho’s departure…

Kasper Schmeichel

Much has been made about the struggles of goalkeepers Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius at Liverpool, with many feeling that the Reds still need a quality shot-stopper to start regularly competing for major honours.

So why not take a look at someone who has helped his side win the Premier League in recent years, namely Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The 31-year-old kept an astonishing 15 clean sheets and conceded just 36 goals in the Foxes’ march to the title back in 2016, while he also produced several impressive displays last term in their run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

And with the Reds clearly in need of a shot-stopper, they could do a lot worse than make a move for Schmeichel in the New Year.

Suso

Suso came up through the ranks at Liverpool but only went on to make 21 first team appearances for the Reds, before moving on to AC Milan in the summer of 2015 in a bid to resurrect his career.

And resurrect his career he has with 13 goals and 18 assists in 67 appearances for the Italian giants, including six goals and six assists this term in what has been another excellent few months for the Spaniard, who earned his senior debut for his country last month as well.

And with Liverpool reportedly expressing an interest to bring him back earlier this year, they could well do so again in January, and with the futures of Emre Can and of course Coutinho far from certain, it’s a deal Klopp must look to strike in the New Year.

Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool’s defensive problems have been well-documented for a while now, with the Reds having conceded more goals than any other side in the top four, while they and Arsenal (20) have shipped more than any side in the top seven.

Thus, it’s clear that Klopp needs to bolster that department, and a move for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk could well be on the cards once again in January after missing out on the Dutchman during the summer.

The 26-year-old looked set for a move to Anfield only for no deal to materialise, yet he has since performed reasonably well in the heart of Mauricio Pellegrino’s defence to further underline his status as one of the best centre-backs in the league.

And with Liverpool in serious need of a player like van Dijk, it’s a move Klopp must look to make in January.
