Rangers have gone surprisingly left-field with the appointment of Pedro Caixinha and it’s little surprise that Gers fans here in the Tavern are a little concerned with the somewhat unknown appointment!

Rangers are 33 points behind bitter rivals Celtic after 28 games and despite not many Gers fans expecting to win the title on their return back to the top-flight, they probably didn’t think it would have been this easy for the Bhoys.

But after Mark Warburton’s departure, there have been plenty of names linked with the club and it’s been decided that Pedro Caixinha will now be the man to lead Rangers into the next chapter of their history.

The former Al-Gharafa man has the chance to build on a solid 1-1 draw away at bitter rivals Celtic on Sunday afternoon and it seems that optimism is high here in the Tavern amongst the Gers faithful, who are excited about the future.

So with that in mind and the new man in place and ready to go, here’s three things all Rangers fans will be thinking after the appointment of Pedro Caixinha…

Who is he?

Arguably the first thing on most fans’ minds when Caixinha was appointed was “who is this chap?”

Well, he’s a Portuguese manager who has a wealth of experience managing all over the world. He was most recently with Qatari club Al-Gharafa, who won their last match in charge under Caixinha 10-1.

He’s also had spells with Santos Laguna in Mexico and Nacional back in his native Portugal.

His playing career wasn’t that spectacular

Its slightly rarer than what we normally see but it’s interesting to note that Pedro Caixinha played as a goalkeeper when he was a professional player.

Gers fans here in the Tavern think it’s excellent news for goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and his development, but the new gaffer didn’t play at a particularly high level during his days on the pitch.

He played his entire ten-year career in the lower divisions in Portugal. But Andre Villas Boas proved you don’t have to have played at the top to mix with the big-boys in management.

His age deceives him

As we mentioned earlier, Caixinha didn’t play at a terrifically high level when he was a player but his first job in management was in his late 20’s.

His first job was at Beja but a large bulk of his coaching career has been as a number two.

What is known is that this is an ambitious appointment but Rangers fans here in the Tavern are excited that a new chapter in the club’s history is beginning and despite his young age as a gaffer, he’s got plenty of experience.
