The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern today are drinking to forget their defensive performance against Watford on the opening day.

After a summer that has felt like an eternity, the Premier League is back and the opening weekend provided its fair share of shocks.

One of those surprise results saw Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool put in one of the worst defensive displays of recent memory as they threw away a 3-2 lead in the last minute to draw 3-3 with Watford at Vicarage Road.

Credit where credit is due to Marco Silva’s side but this result was certainly one that could have been avoided by Liverpool in a game where they really should have walked away with all three points.

There are plenty of things that both Klopp and Silva will have noted down after the full-time whistle.

With that being said, here are three things we learned from Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Watford.

Zonal marking does not work

How many times does our landlord have to say it? Zonal marking just does not work.

Arsenal proved that in their game against Leicester on Friday and Liverpool proved it against Watford.

Virgil van Dijk is supposedly going to be the saviour of Liverpool’s defence but if they continue to use zonal marking then he won’t make any difference at all.

Klopp needs to change his tactics because Liverpool won’t be winning anything if they continue to use this marking system.

Liverpool might be ok without Coutinho

Despite their terrible defensive performance at Vicarage road, Liverpool still managed three goals on Saturday.

This proves that they could be ok without Philippe Coutinho amidst rumours that he is trying to force through a move to Barcelona.

Players like Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah can still provide them with plenty of goals this season in spite of Coutinho’s departure if it were to happen.

Watford have enough fight to survive

Even though Liverpool put in a bad performance at Vicarage road, a lesser performance from Watford could have let Liverpool off the hook.

Marco Silva’s side showed a lot of fight and determination to get their way back into the game with the late equaliser.

Having been close to relegation last season, the Hornet’s fans are hoping for a better finish come the end of the season and their performance against Liverpool showed some very positive signs.
