Following on from their opening day win over Bournemouth, the West Brom fans have the bragging rights over the Cherries faithful.

The Premier League’s opening weekend has come and gone and it will go down as one of the most exciting in recent history.

Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side made the trip up to the Hawthorns on Saturday only to suffer a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tony Pulis’ team.

Obviously, it is a bit early on in the season to be discussing where these two sides will end up come the final day but there are a few things we can learn from this opening fixture.

West Brom fans will be hoping their side can push on from their usual mid-table finish, and the Cherries are going to be working towards improving on their ninth-place finish last season.

With that being said, here are THREE things we learned from West Brom’s narrow win over Bournemouth…..

Ahmed Hegazi could be West Brom’s new star

West Brom’s problems have usually been found in their attack as opposed to their defence.

However, with Ahmed Hegazi they might have found a player who can do both.

The Egyptian kicked off his debut with the only goal of the game and provided a solid defensive performance too.

At the end of the season the club have the chance to make Hegazi’s loan spell permanent and if he continues with performances like that, then Pulis could have a new star in his side.

Nathan Ake still has to prove himself

Despite being a great servant to Bournemouth during his loan spell last season, Nathan Ake proved he still has a way to go in terms of his development.

He wasn’t terrible but Bournemouth’s defence continued their struggles especially from set-pieces where nobody picked Hegazi up for his headed goal.

It is unfair to put all the blame on Bournemouth’s new centre-back but when you spend £20 million on a player, you expect more than what the former Chelsea player showed.

Bournemouth’s attacking play still has a lot of work to do

Although there was a fantastic defensive display put on by West Brom following their goal, Bournemouth’s failures to take advantage of the majority of the attacking play shows they still have work to do on the training ground.

Bournemouth had 60 minutes of the Baggies sitting back and defending to try and force their way through and even after bringing on Jermain Defoe, that didn’t happen.

The Cherries attack was lethal at times last season but their opening day fixture didn’t show much of the same.
