Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting a wealth of changes this summer, as they express their disappointment following last night’s goalless draw with Manchester City.
That result ensured Pep Guardiola’s side still hold the advantage in the race for a top-four finish, with United facing a difficult task as they’ve still got to tackle second-placed Tottenham Hotspur and Arsene Wenger’s summer.
Fortunately, Jose Mourinho’s side have a second route into the Champions League via their continued involvement in the Europa League, where they face Celta Vigo next week in the semi-finals, but major changes are expected this summer.
Amongst the players linked with an exit is captain and all-time leading scorer Wayne Rooney, who refused to clarify whether he’d stay at Old Trafford after yesterday’s draw. Quoted by The Daily Star, the skipper said:
“You want to play games. I haven’t played as many as I’d like to have done this season and you want to be back in the side.”
“It was good to get the win and the goal (at Burnley). I want to stay in the team and that was a good start for me. That’s happened the last few years (being written off). All I can do is keep working. Not to prove myself, but to prove people wrong.”
“(Will he stay at United?) I answered that question in February. My focus is to reach the Europa League final and hopefully win it. And to make sure we finish in the top four. That’s my aim and focus at the minute.”
Rooney, who’s on £300k-a-week at United, has been linked with a move to the MLS and China, as well as a return to boyhood club Everton, but our landlord feels the veteran forward will inevitably move abroad – although he’s unsure what that would mean for his England chances.
