The local Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are mightily excited about the future of their club.

Whilst they’ve had to endure a number of false dawns in recent memory, 2013/14 being the last, they really feel this time they are about to embark on a new, glorious, era.

Jurgen Klopp has his charges playing some of the best football in the country as they are taking even the biggest teams apart, and the hope is a league title is finally going to be returning to Anfield for the first time in over a quarter of a century.

Whether they actually do or not is, of course, something that remains to be seen, but nevertheless, the future is bright if you look at the number of young players they have coming through.

It’s a good time, then, to have a think about what the side could look like in five years and our landlord reckons it’ll look something like this…..

Loris Karius

The young German looks already to be the Reds number one, taking over from Simon Mignolet.

He’s young and good at both aerial balls and shot stopping so could be between the sticks for years.

Goalkeepers usually have longer careers than outfield players and that’s exactly what we should expect with Karius.

Trent Alexander Arnold

Alexander-Arnold can play both as a right back and central midfield, and may find himself on the right in the years to come with Liverpool’s talent in the centre of the park.

That’s not to say he won’t progress to that position, of course, because a certain Steven Gerrard featured as a right back in his first few senior appearances.

Joel Matip

Matip looks solid and assured at the back so it’s easy to forget that he actually has most of his career still ahead of him.

In five years time he’ll be right in his prime as a centre half and will be wanting to look back at a load of medals that he’s won with the club.

Joe Gomez

Many are excited about Joe Gomez after he signed last year.

He impressed filling in at left-back before his injury ruled him out for most of the season but many have not forgotten the kinds of performance he was putting in.

If he can stay fit there’s no reason why he won’t be able to be the Reds other centre half in the future.

Jon Flanagan

Many connected with Liverpool want to see Flanagan make it.

It looked like he would, too, under Brendan Rodgers but injuries have set him back and he’s now on loan at Burnley.

Liverpool fans would love to see him back though and with that kind of support maybe he can still make it back into the first team’s plans.

Emre Can

Can is looking like a class midfielder and still has a lot left to give.

The German will be around for years the Reds fans hope and so there’ll be no reason for him to not be playing.

He’ll be at the peak of his powers and likely one of the best Liverpool players around.

Jordan Henderson

The captain will be 31 in five years’ time so there’s no reason why he won’t be still in the Liverpool midfield.

Over the last few seasons he has progressed nicely and if he can continue like that over the next few seasons, he’ll be a crucial part of the Liverpool side.

Philippe Coutinho

Keeping Coutinho will suggest the Reds have done well over the next five years.

He’s arguably their best player right now and it’s not inconceivable to think that he will be for time to come.

He’s improved a lot since signing from Inter Milan and if he continues to do so will be one of the best around.

Ovie Ejaria

The midfielder has the makings to be a powerhouse in the centre and that’ll make him a hit with Reds fans.

He scored for the England under 20’s side earlier this week against the United States and in five years’ time Liverpool, and England fans will be hoping he’s doing that for the respective senior sides.

Sheyi Ojo

Ojo has made a handful of appearances in recent times and looks like he could be a decent winger.

He’s strong and direct down that left side and as we’ve seen with Sadio Mane at the moment that kind of contribution can really transform the way a team attack.

Definitely one to watch.

Ben Woodburn

Woodburn has scored in a number of the senior side’s friendlies in recent times and in five years will only be in his early 20’s.

This shows exactly how far he could go but also how far he still needs to come.

The signs are there that he could be top drawer and he’ll be hoping to show that more in the future.
