The Liverpool fans are in the Transfer Tavern tonight and they are discussing their chances in this season’s Champions League.

The best club competition in the world returns to our TV screens next week as the UEFA Champions League gets back underway.

This season’s competition sees Liverpool make their return to the famous competition, which they last won in 2005 on that incredible night in Istanbul.

Jurgen Klopp’s side face Sevilla next week in their opening game at Anfield in a game that they are expected to win quite comfortably.

Klopp will want to get Liverpool off to the best possible start in this seasons competition so it is likely the German boss will put forward his strongest team in order to guarantee all three points.

Of course, there are no guarantees in football, but a strong starting XI will certainly up their chances.

On that note, here is the starting XI that Klopp needs to pick to demolish Sevilla…

Loris Karius

In our landlord’s opinion, Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation isn’t great but Loris Karius is the best they’ve got.

He deserves his chance to rotate with Simon Mignolet once again.

His Belgian rival conceded five at the weekend, after all.

LB – Andrew Robertson

Andrew Robertson has only made one appearance for Liverpool this season after his move from Hull in the summer.

Our landlord rates the left-back very highly and thinks he should be in the squad over Alberto Moreno.

His prowess up and down the left flank will give Sevilla headaches all night long.

CB – Dejan Lovren

Similarly to their goalkeeping situation, Liverpool don’t have much depth in the centre of their defence and some would argue not much quality either.

Dejan Lovren isn’t a bad defender and is certainly one of the only two good enough to feature in this game.

CB – Joel Matip

Joel Matip is likely going to be Lovren’s central defensive partner against Sevilla.

He’s got height going for him and when he’s at his best, he can be a good centre-back and should have enough about him to help Liverpool demolish Sevilla.

RB – Joe Gomez

With Nathaniel Clyne out injured, Joe Gomez has stepped in to be Liverpool’s right-back until his return.

The 20-year-old traditionally plays as a centre-back but has done well in his new role, even getting an assist in the Reds’ 4-0 demolition job on Arsenal.

CM – Jordan Henderson

The club captain Jordan Henderson isn’t a player that our landlord rates too highly.

He’s not a bad player but he will always be compared to Steven Gerrard and Henderson just doesn’t have the qualities to do what Gerrard did in his career.

He still has enough about him to put in a good shift in defensive midfield and help Liverpool pick up three points.

CM – Emre Can

Now Emre Can is a player who our landlord rates very highly.

Billed as a defensive midfielder, Can has proven in the past that he is proficient going forward and can be utilised well in both defence and attack throughout the 90 minutes.

Expect the young German to put in a big performance in Liverpool’s opening UCL game.

CM – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Liverpool’s newest signing, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could play as a central midfielder for his new club and our landlord thinks this would be the perfect game to try him out in the role.

Sevilla won’t provide too much of a test if Liverpool play at their best so the Ox should be given a chance to shine on his UCL debut for the Reds.

LW – Sadio Mane

Arguably Liverpool’s best player.

Sadio Mane has already scored a number of goals in the Premier League this season and has shown no signs of slowing down.

Expect him to be involved in any goals scored against Sevilla.

RW – Mohamed Salah

A new boy at Anfield, Mohamed Salah joined Jurgen Klopp’s side this summer and has kicked his career off for Liverpool in the best of ways.

Two goals and two assists in the opening three Premier League games this season has made the 25-year-old another one of Chelsea’s ‘ones that got away’.

ST – Roberto Firmino

The final member of Liverpool’s lethal front three.

Roberto Firmino, much like Salah, has scored two and assisted two in the league to take the front three’s total to seven goals and four assists in three Premier League games.

A great centre-forward and a proven goal scorer, if Firmino plays at his best next week then Sevilla’s defence will be in for a tough 90 minutes.
