Despite playing down expectations, Jurgen Klopp must know he’s expected to bring the Premier League title to Liverpool – the fans in the Transfer Tavern certainly think so anyway!

The German transformed Borussia Dortmund from Bundesliga also-rans into one of the most feared sides on the continent as they swept to back-to-back titles in Germany.

Klopp has been appointed with a similar task in mind at Anfield. Bar 2013/14 the Reds haven’t looked like serious title challengers for some time and it’s the German’s job now to try and change that.

He’s had time to assess his squad, where they’re strong and where they’re not, and also seen their potential in light of reaching two cup finals last season and it’s time now to kick on.

With no European football this season some are expecting the Reds to go well in the league as they can focus a lot more on that than some of their rivals.

Our landlord is of this opinion too and if they go with this 4-5-1 they could end their league title drought at last….

Loris Karius, Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip, Jonas Hector

Even in the ultimately unsuccessful 2013/14 title challenge the Reds defence was poor.

Their get out of jail card was the fact that Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge were both on fire but that’s long since gone, and also proved that to win a title you need a good defence.

Karius has been brought in to replace the occasionally flappy Simon Mignolet whilst Clyne and Lovren will look to build on solid campaigns last term. Matip will surely start ahead of Sakho and with Liverpool’s left back position needing work – Jonas Hector could be the perfect fix.

Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Roberto Firmino, Philipe Coutinho

Sadio Mane has come into the club with the hope he’ll bring the pace and power that made him a hit at Southampton, and could give Liverpool an added dynamic out wide.

Emre Can could have a stellar season whilst Philipe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino will be expected to weigh in with a fair amount of goals to get even within a sniff of the title.

It’s a big season, meanwhile, for the captain Henderson.

He needs to prove his fitness is back to where it was and also add goals to his game but with his good running Klopp will surely give him a chance.

Daniel Sturridge

The last two seasons have shown that when Daniel Sturridge is not fit, Liverpool suffer badly.

The England striker came back towards the end of last season, and made an impact but it was too late to have much affect on the Reds’ final league position.

If Klopp can keep him fit as he has done since his return Liverpool are in with a shout, because on his day, he is simply world class.
