Though Manchester United could still finish in the top four AND win the FA Cup, few would argue it hasn’t been a frustrating season at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils may well finish the season strongly, though the quarter of a billions pounds spent on improving the team has largely gone to waste.
This summer will be a pivotal one for the club. Louis van Gaal, looking increasingly likely to stay, is an architect of great teams.
However, he simply cannot afford to make too many more mistakes in the transfer market.
It seems clear that some of the players who have flopped so badly will be sold. Too many of the names simply aren’t the standard required to play for a club as big as Manchester United.
So, while much of the transfer talk naturally centres around expensive recruits. Who could leave?

Marcos Rojo
Marcos Rojo can look very good at crossing in glimpses. But that’s about it.
The Argentine has failed to establish himself as either a centre-back of left-back during his near enough two years at Old Trafford.
In fact, the only thing he has established himself as is a defensive liability.
Adnan Januzaj
It’s becoming increasingly hard to remember why there was such a wave of excitement about Adnan Januzaj a few years ago now.
The forward emerged as a saviour of the David Moyes era, which tells all you need to know about those miserable seven months.
Still only 21-years old, though the playmaker has utterly stagnated and does not look like having much of a future under van Gaal.
Michael Carrick
Michael Carrick has been a wonderful servant to Manchester United and has enjoyed much success since his move from Spurs around a decade ago.
However, the 34-year old perfectly sums up the Red Devils at their very worst this season.
He’s a wonderful passer of the ball, though his distribution tends to be either sideways or backwards and he lacks the tendency to use the pace of Anthony Martial effectively.
Not so much a flop, though his contract shouldn’t be renewed.
Phil Jones
Many thought it would be Phil Jones who would develop into the best defender at Old Trafford. They were wrong. It happened to Chris Smalling.
Jones has never convinced since moving from Blackburn Rovers and has failed to embark on the upward trajectory Sir Alex Ferguson predicted he would.
Far too injury prone and nowhere near good enough when he is fully fit.
