When we asked our resident Liverpool supporters inside the Football Transfer Tavern to select their top five Reds goals of the past 10 years, in reality, we could’ve extended the list to include 20 or more!
Having scored some of the most iconic Premier League goals in the modern era, the Kop has seen greats such as Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez and more recently Philippe Coutinho do their thing but if the truth be told, it appears the Reds are lacking that X-factor somewhat nowadays.
While Brendan Rodgers can call on Coutinho who has embraced a new found importance and responsibility since Suarez’s departure, few other members of Liverpool’s squad have stepped up to the plate on nearly as consistent a basis.
Incredibly inconsistent, we’ve already seen Liverpool lose 3-0 at home at West Ham United this season while before that turning on the style in a dominating display down at Arsenal, despite eventually toiling towards a 0-0 draw.
Rodgers will need to coax the best performances out of his Liverpool squad on a more frequent basis if the Redmen are to re-join the top table of European football in the Champions League for next season instead of making trips to Bordeaux like they’ll did in midweek for the inferior Europa League.
But with Liverpool supporters willing to forget the here and now this season for one second, we’re concentrating on those five best Liverpool strikes of the last 10 years.

Daniel Agger vs West Ham United (H) – 2006
When Daniel Agger departed Liverpool to join Brondby of his native Denmark for a second spell in his career last summer, many onlookers thought a downwards step kind of move like this was far too soon in the player’s career.
Still 30-years-old and not a total veteran yet, obviously Brondby holds a special place in Agger’s heart but prior to securing a move back home to Scandinavia, it wasn’t that long before that the likes of Barcelona were being mentioned as a potential destination for him.
In and out of the Liverpool starting eleven for an elongated period of eight years, Agger was a loyal servant to the club and even got a tattoo of Y.N.W.A (You’ll Never Walk Alone) on the fingers of his right hand so what more can endear you to the Kop?
Well, something that did was his simply unstoppable strike against West Ham United back in his debut season of 2006/07 whereby Agger showcased the deadly shooting ability he possesses from range with aplomb.
Absolutely rooting Roy Carroll in the West Ham goal, there isn’t a goalkeeper in world football that could’ve gotten a hand onto this superbly accurate strike from distance.
Steven Gerrard (2nd) vs West Ham United (FA Cup Final) – 2006
One of the most iconic goals in Liverpool’s entire glittering history, let alone the past 10 years, who can forget Steven Gerrard’s simply majestic power blast from range against West Ham United in the FA Cup Final of 2006?
With West Ham United moving into a comfortable 2-0 lead over the Reds through a Jamie Carragher own goal and then Dean Ashton in the opening 28 minutes, it wasn’t so comfortable for long after Djibril Cisse earned a consolation goal back on 32 minutes to make it 2-1.
From here, captain fantastic Steven Gerrard levelled up on the 54th minute before Paul Konchesky again put West Ham out in front 10 minutes later, making it 3-2 to the Hammers.
With Liverpool staring down the barrel of a cup shock, who else but their main man Gerrard stepped up when his club and city (Everton fans aside) needed him, rifling a 91st minute 30-yarder into the back of Shaka Hislop’s goal.
It was Liverpool who suddenly had the momentum heading into extra-time before eventually the Reds won it on penalties.
One of the best FA Cup Final’s of recent memory and a day that is forever etched in the mind of the original midfield marvel himself Steven Gerrard.
Luis Garcia vs Chelsea (H) – 2005
For any Chelsea supporter that is reading this piece, they will of course vigorously protest that this was never even a goal but given the fact it was successfully awarded to Liverpool, the infamous “ghost goal” of 2004/05 deserves its place in our outrageous countdown by nature.
Taking place in a Champions League semi-final second leg to boot, this was very much the start of the Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho rivalry with the Blues understandably livid with Ľuboš Micheľs decision to award a goal for Luis Garcia’s header that was inconclusive from television replays, let alone with the referee trying to make a judgement.
With the English duo playing out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the semi-final, tensions were obviously running high and in a tight encounter, it was this controversial goal that ultimately proved the difference between the teams before Liverpool faced AC Milan in the final with the rest being history as they say.
Xabi Alonso vs Newcastle United (H) – 2006
You only have to mention the three words ‘Xabi Alonso goal’ for Liverpool fans to reminisce exactly which strike you’re going on about and we’re not talking about the Luton Town one which in fairness, was quite one hell of a goal to boot!
The Spaniard’s goal from inside his own half against Newcastle United at Anfield in 2006/07 will forever stand out as one of the most outrageous strikes seen on Merseyside ever.
On the night, Dirk Kuyt had put the Reds 1-0 up with the Magpies understandably trying to chase the game with time running out.
With Toon Army stopper Steve Harper having naturally thought there was no threat when trying to coax his team-mates up the pitch, how foolish this proved to be when Alonso pinched the ball off United’s midfield only to unleash a deadly accurate drive David Beckham at Wimbledon style into the back of the Newcastle net.
As Andy Gray repeatedly said in his days at Sky Sports, take a bow son!
Steven Gerrard vs Middlesbrough (H) – 2005
In fairness, we could’ve dedicated this goal gallery to scintillating goals scored by Steven Gerrard but having to share the goals around of course, one we couldn’t leave out however was the legendary number eight’s strike against Middlesbrough at Anfield in April 2005.
While the ‘You Beautyyyyy’ strike of 2004 against Olympiakos in the Champions League misses out due to the fact it was scored just over a decade ago now, one which sits alongside it in the most outrageous stakes was this one against Boro in a Premier League game with the Reds actually trailing to a fourth minute Szilard Nemeth strike.
Eventually toiling to a 1-1 draw with their North East opposition, there was nothing average about the equaliser however as Gerrard collected the ball from around 40 yards out from the Boro goal before controlling it, getting over it and power blasting an angled drive which hammered past Brad Jones into the back of Middlesbrough’s net.
Simply unstoppable. Pick that one out!
