Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern gathered early this afternoon to discuss the latest transfer rumours ahead of tonight’s League Cup clash and they’re optimistic of some exciting deals in January.
With reports emerging today that Liverpool have revived interest in Mario Suarez, who is open to an exit, and the fact that Fiorentina are open to a sale, it seems likely that the Spaniard will become Jurgen Klopp’s first recruit at Anfield.
That’s not enough for our Liverpool faithful though, who are discussing what other players could follow Suarez’ footsteps to Merseyside in the New Year. Five players were central to their discussions, so sink your teeth into this lot.

Xabi Alonso
In the past few weeks reports have emerged to suggest that fan favourite Xabi Alonso could return to Liverpool, which would be a major boost to the squad. For many in the bar, selling the Spaniard to Real Madrid was one of the biggest mistakes in their recent history.
It would be a surprise if this deal was to go through though as Alonso is still a crucial part of Bayern Munich’s midfield. Nevertheless, they do have the likes of Arturo Vidal, Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcantara- so there’s an argument to suggest the Spaniard could be offloaded.
Denis Cheryshev
Real Madrid ace Denis Cheryshev hasn’t had his chance in the Spanish capital and that doesn’t seem like improving, with reports suggesting another loan spell is on the cards in January. Premier League clubs have their eyes open, one of which is Liverpool.
The winger would provide a major boost and Liverpool may well agree a loan deal with an agreement for a permanent move further down the line. As Jurgen Klopp looks to improve his squad depth, Cheryshev could be a valuable addition.
Jack Butland
Mark Hughes may have issued and hands-off warning concerning Jack Butland, and Jurgen Klopp has publicly stated he doesn’t want a new goalkeeper, but links concerning the England international and Liverpool just won’t go away.
Whilst there’s a case that Butland is not needed, he would be a huge improvement on Adam Bogdan and you could argue that he’s better that Simon Mignolet. There’s no argument though that Butland would be a stellar addition for the future and a move to Liverpool would increase his chances of dislodging Joe Hart as England number one.
Lewis Cook
Leeds United ace Lewis Cook has attracted vast interest from across the Premier League due to his stellar performances this season and Liverpool are just one side in the race. Unlike many of their competitors though, the Reds have a strong case to lure him to Anfield.
Cook has more chance of first-team football at Liverpool rather than the likes of Manchester United, whilst Jurgen Klopp has a reputation for developing youngsters into terrific footballers. This could well be a match made in heaven.
Andre Ayew
Swansea City star Andre Ayew has excelled for the struggling Welsh outfit this season and he made headlines when he conceded last month that he is open to a move to a top Premier League club in January. The question is whether Liverpool are big enough.
They should be, in truth, as the Ghanian would be handed a strong chance of playing Champions League football next season and would be a regular starter. For the other European chasing sides, he may only be a squad option.
