After Jurgen Klopp was announced as Liverpool’s manager earlier this week, speculation has linked the German boss to several of his former Borussia Dortmund stars.
One of those, the ultimate dream, is winger Marco Reus. A player signed by Klopp for £15m and one that has gone from strength-to-strength; being extremely unfortunate to miss Germany’s World Cup success through injury.
Reus has the eyes of numerous European giants, so surely it’s impossible for Liverpool to win the race for his signature?
Actually, it isn’t. Here we’ve detailed five reasons why Marco Reus could actually be lured to Anfield in January. Optimistic? Perhaps. Ludicrous? Certainly not!

Jurgen Klopp
The first reason why Liverpool can pull-off this major coup is pretty simple; Jurgen Klopp himself.
The German boss helped craft Marco Reus into the player he now is, purchasing the talented winger for just £15m in 2012, bringing him to Dortmund from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Monchengladbach.
At Gladbach he was a star, and highly-regarded, but now Reus is one of the hottest players in European football and owes a lot to Klopp- which could be extremely crucial if he decides to leave Dortmund.
Liverpool’s project
Things are quite difficult for Marco Reus. He’s gone from Gladbach to Dortmund, where expectations are reasonably low, and the same can be said for the German national side. Whilst expectations are high there, he’s surrounded by talented superstars.
What could be a problem is a big-money move to Bayern Munich, Barcelona or Real Madrid; where the media scrutiny is intense, the pressure increases ten-fold and the fans will be on your back if you do not perform.
The same is the case in the Premier League but Klopp’s Liverpool project would see Reus become a cog in the machine, rather than the stand-out world-beater. It’s a less emphatic jump and it could provide a huge difference in Reus’ career.
Ready to move
Marco Reus may well be ready to move. Astonishingly he’s never won the Bundesliga, having arrived after Dortmund’s consecutive league successes, and it’s unlikely Dortmund, or anyone, can stop Bayern’s grip on the title.
Despite the league miseries, Reus has won two SuperCups and has been a runner-up in both the Champions League and DFB-Pokal. He deserves more honours in truth but it’ll be difficult to do that with Dortmund.
The answer? Seek a new environment. Liverpool may not guarantee titles but they should be there or there about regularly.
Germans in the Premier League
If Marco Reus was to move to the Premier League then he’d find himself amongst many of his compatriots. Liverpool have Emre Can, whilst a short-way away in Manchester lies Bastian Schweinsteiger. Add Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil to the mix and you’re left with a strong German contingent.
All those players can help Reus settle into his new environment and whilst Barcelona and Real Madrid have German players, they don’t have the sheer depth of them that the Premier League has.
Obviously, Bayern Munich do.
Avoid betrayal
If Marco Reus was to move to Bayern Munich the Dortmund fans would not be happy. They didn’t like it when Mario Gotze did it, understandably, but gave Robert Lewandowski a touching farewell- though he had done a hell of a lot for the club.
Reus’ impact at Dortmund hasn’t been as significant as Lewandowski’s so a departure wouldn’t be similar, instead it would more likely be hate-filled and full of frustration; as Dortmund don’t want to lose any more stars to their bitter rivals.
How does Reus avoid that? Move to Liverpool. The fans will be more forgiving.
