Under Jose Mourinho, the United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are once again enjoying watching their team play.

It’s been a barren few years in the aftermath of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, with the downward slope under David Moyes’ 10-month reign after which Ryan Giggs took over for the final few games of the season and two boring as hell and frustrating to watch years with Louis Van Gaal.

Although he did deliver the clubs first FA cup since 2004 in his second and final season, it just wasn’t good enough.

So, when Mourinho took over there was an air of optimism amongst many of our punters and a return to the glory years was chimed out all over the Tavern.

The Portuguese handed United the League Cup and Europa League trophies in his first season. which no other United manager has done. Going into his second season with the Red Devils, Mourinho has assembled an amazing squad that looks early on like it’s going to compete in every competition.

So it’s strange to think our landlord says despite all this United shouldn’t hand him a new deal (as has been linked), here’s why…

The 3 year blow out

As with the majority of Mourinho’s clubs he’s managed there’s a cycle to his work, He arrives, he transforms the team to trophy winners, he starts to implode, the results don’t come, he leaves.

Next season is his third with United and many a fan is already anticipating the ticking time bomb to go off, he’s stressed he wants to stay long term but that’s just not in the Portuguese’s make up to do.

Mourinho’s ambition

Mourinho has managed some of the best sides in Europe – Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Man United and Porto, his ambition might be to manage a club in each country and with the French league currently on the ascendency, PSG could be a futue option.

It would be hard not to see Mourinho being headhunted by PSG while the money and glamour are good, plus they want to win trophies and have quick turnarounds, which is Mourinho’s speciality.

Financial implications

After handing David Moyes a six-year contract and firing him within 10 months and then seeing off Louis Van Gaal two seasons into a three-year deal, United will be looking not to make the same mistake again.

A series of payouts in compensation will teach the United board to take their time when handing out contracts, it’d be wise to wait until the middle of the third season to offer the extension.

Major Improvements

There’s no doubt under Jose Mourinho, United have excelled and moved forward winning two cups but a sixth-placed finish in the league won’t cut it for a United side who’ve struggled in the league since 2013.

United are flying high at the moment but can this be sustained throughout the season as the quest for trophies heats up, Mourinho will have to prove to the board he can take this United side back to the top of the Premier League.

Personality

In interviews, the United boss lacks his old dynamic self, he sometimes looks as if the world of troubles is on his shoulders, we all know Mourinho tries to create a siege mentality with his squad.

But the United PR team will want a more friendly and happier Mourinho if he is to be the spearhead of the Man United train, maybe we’ll see that when he starts improving in the league or maybe, just maybe the United job might be the biggest job he’s taken on and he can’t handle the pressure.
