Tottenham made it four straight victories in all competitions, with a Boxing Day win over Leictester City at the King Power Stadium.
The result sees Tottenham remain in seventh place, level on points with bitter rivals Arsenal – and just two points behind fourth placed Southampton.
December has been an excellent month for Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino, and with confidence and momentum now flowing, there is no reason to suggest Spurs cannot maintain their challenge for the top four – and that coveted final Champions League place.

Harry Kane can’t stop scoring
Tottenham have a player capable of scoring the goals to fire them into the Champions League based on current form – Harry Kane. The homegrown striker has been one of the most pleasing surprises of the season for Spurs, whilst his first minute strike in the win at Leicester on Boxing Day was in fact his 15th goal of the season in all competitions. If Tottenham can keep him fit, who knows where his goals can take them.
They have a proven matchwinner in Christian Eriksen
The difference between who finishes in the top four may well come down to which side sees their match winners produce on a regular basis. Christian Eriksen has been superb for Tottenham this season, and is perhaps the best set piece taker in the division.
He produced another moment of magic in the win at Leicester, with a cheeky free kick proving the winner late in the game. The Danish international is capable of winning matches almost on his own, no matter how poorly Tottenham might be playing. He is enjoying a good run of form at present, and must maintain it if Spurs are to make the top four.
Pochettino will be backed in January
Tottenham had a fairly quiet summer transfer window by their usually busy standards, meaning chairman Daniel Levy is more likely to back Pochettino in the transfer market this winter. Spurs are in need of a new forward to support Harry Kane, and perhaps a new centre back and a holding midfielder.
They have been linked with forwards the likes of Jay Rodriguez, Jackson Martinez and Paco Alcacer, whilst they maintain an interest in Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin. A couple of top additions in January would really aid their push for the top four this season.
They have the best goalkeeper of their rivals
Assuming West Ham and Southampton see their challenge for the top four fade in the new year as many expect, it looks to come down to a battle between Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool for the final spot – given those sides experience ahead of the other sides currently up there.
It could well end up coming down to just a few points, points that could be won by a top class goalkeeper. Tottenham boast that in Hugo Lloris, a man capable of producing match winning moments at key points. Whilst Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny has been decent, he is not at that same level, and Liverpool’s goalkeeping problems with Simon Mignolet have been well documented.
The team will only improve under Pochettino
There were early problems for Tottenham this season – particularly at home – with the team trying to come to terms with Pochettini’s style of play, whilst navigating their way through a busy schedule that includes Europa League action.
Now the side appears to have gathered some confidence and winning momentum, you can’t help but think they will only get better over the second half of the season, especially at White Hart Lane now it appears the fans are onside again.
With a possible trip to Wembley to also look forward to in the new year with a Capital One Cup semi against Sheffield United, things are looking very bright for Spurs at present – and confidence will only improve the situation.
