5 stars Liverpool could realistically sign in January

Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been revitalised by Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as the Reds manager and they’re extremely excited for his first transfer window.

The new Liverpool boss has a strong record in the transfer market with Borussia Dortmund, signing the likes of Marco Reus, Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during his time with the German side.

Each of those players is now a world beater but they weren’t rated anywhere near as highly before purchases and Liverpool fans are hoping that Klopp has an ace up his sleeve for the Reds, securing an absolute gem in the transfer market.

Whilst they dream of securing Reus and Mats Hummels in January, the reality is that it’s unlikely to happen and we’ve drawn up a list of realistic targets that Jurgen Klopp could secure in the New Year.

Nuri Sahin

Nuri Sahin

Formerly spending an unsuccessful loan spell at Anfield, Nuri Sahin has been linked with a shock return to Liverpool. However if there’s anyone that can get the best out of the midfielder it’s his former boss, Jurgen Klopp.

The 27-year-old Turkish international is still at Dortmund but has irregular playing time, facing competition for starts from the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Sven Bender and Shinji Kagawa. Liverpool could offer more chances in the first-team, with their midfielder needing bolstering.

Ruben Neves

One signing that would add a huge degree of spark into Liverpool’s midfield is 18-year-old Porto midfielder Ruben Neves, a player who recently became the youngest captain in Champions League history. The difficulty though would be luring him away from one of Europe’s elite.

With Neves, and Porto, possibly advancing to the latter stages of the competition there appears to be no reason as to why the 18-year-old would leave. It seems like a signing more likely to occur next summer- but with Arsenal and Chelsea also keen, a bidding war could emerge in the New Year.

Anwar El Ghazi

El Ghazi

Currently the top-scorer in the Eredivisie, Ajax ace Anwar El Ghazi is being eyed to bolster the Reds struggling forward line. On the face of it, the Dutch winger could be the perfect replacement for Raheem Sterling.

Ajax are determined not to sell but if Liverpool were to lodge a tempting offer to the player, the 20-year-old could force a move. A hefty sum would likely be required but for a player of El Ghazi’s talents it would certainly be wisely spent.

Nevan Subotic

Subotic

One of the first Borussia Dortmund men linked with a move to Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp’s arrival was one that’s also the most likely to take place, with Subotic not getting much first-team action in Dortmund and Liverpool in desperate need of defensive recruits.

The experienced defender would add a major boost to the Reds struggling back-line, potentially providing the platform for a return to Champions League football- with Liverpool having a huge chance with Chelsea struggling in the league.

Mario Suarez

Sharing a name with a former Liverpool favourite, defensive midfielder Mario Suarez is a completely different player to namesake Luis. However, he could be as important to the side with Jurgen Klopp needing talented defensive midfielders for his vision at the club.

Whilst Emre Can has impressed, a partnership with Mario Suarez could take Liverpool to the next level- especially with Jordan Henderson struggling with injury concerns.
