The Old Firm Derby is a game that has earned recognition around the footballing world as both Glaswegian outfits Rangers and Celtic battle it out. However, things have not always gone so well for the former, especially in the recent past.
The two rivals have met 414 times throughout history across all competitions, with the Ibrox outfit shading the most wins with 159, however, with the Bhoys’ recent domination of Scottish football, they have managed to cut their lead to just three with 156 victories all time, per Soccerbase.
Following Rangers demotion to the Scottish fourth tier, the sides met just twice in cup semi-finals as they worked their way back to the Scottish Premiership.
However, recent history has not been kind to the Blue side of Glasgow, as they have struggled to get a victory against Celtic since 25th March 2012, although they did secure a penalty shootout victory in the Scottish Cup semi-final in 2016.
A moment in time: Rangers last Old Firm win against Celtic
The last Old Firm win in the Scottish Premiership is certainly one that will last well in the memory of Rangers fans.
In what was an action-packed match, Rangers were 3-2 winners in a game that saw three red cards and Neil Lennon sent to the stands at halftime.
Sone Aluko, Andy Little and Lee Wallace gave Ally McCoist’s side a three-goal advantage, before Scott Brown and Thomas Rogne netted late on.
Cha Du-Ri and Victor Wanyama both received red cards for the visitors whilst Carlos Bocanegra was also given his marching orders by referee Calum Murray.
However, since that memorable day, Rangers have not been able to get too close to their counterparts, with a number of huge scorelines going against them at times.
Steven Gerrard has already overseen one Old Firm derby this season, which was a hard fought 1-0 victory for the Hoops in early September.
The Liverpool legend has been rather successful in getting results this season, especially when it comes down to European football, although their domestic form has been a little patchy.
He has since brought some optimism to Ibrox following his arrival and has given them a real chance of competing in the Scottish Premiership so far this season.
He has already guided his side to a 7-1 win against Motherwell and a 5-1 win over St Johnstone, however, he will undoubtedly be judged on the bigger games – with the Old Firm at the forefront.
Should he be able to rewrite the history books with a victory over Celtic on 29 December, Gerrard will likely write himself into Rangers folklore.
