The Transfer Tavern has been rocked today by reports putting Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham Hotspur in doubt.
Reporting on Inter Milan’s alleged interest, Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has revealed via his personal website that the Belgium international has told Spurs that he won’t sign a new deal at the club – and that his current contract, due to expire in 2020, includes a €28million release clause.
Needless to say, the report has created quite the reaction, with Alderweireld rated as arguably the best defender in the Premier League. He was crucial in Tottenham boasting the best defensive record in the division last year and could help them achieve the same feat come the end of 2016/17.
But the news of the release clause has particularly caught the interest of a rather unlikely group of fans – Arsenal supporters – who want their club to pinch the commanding centre-back from their bitter rivals, echoing the same journey Sol Campbell once infamously made.
