Marko Grujic’s debut season on Merseyside hasn’t been quite the success story he would have hoped for when he left Red Star Belgrade for the Anfielders, with many here in the Transfer Tavern confident Liverpool had secured a Nemanja Matic/Steven Gerrard hybrid of a midfielder.
His pre-season exploits only boosted the hype, but since the campaign has started the Serbia international has been nowhere to be seen. Indeed, the 20-year-old has only made five appearances (two starts in the EFL Cup), playing only 28 minutes of league football in total. The transition was never going to be easy, but Grujic would have set his sights on a better return, regardless of the injury issues that have interrupted his 2016/17.
And now the Eastern European is being aligned with a move away for next season, with Dinamo Zagreb’s Zdravko Mamic having revealed that the club want the midfielder “on loan”.
Such deals usually hint that a player’s career at his parent club is coming to an end, so Liverpool fans have been vocal on Twitter in their opposition to the possible switch…
You know what, I wouldn’t actually loan Grujic, despite interest. When Henderson’s out (which he often is) Lucas is our only CM on the bench

@IndigoLFC Definitely wouldn’t loan him out, he was quality last night for the U23’s.

Grujic seems like the long term solution for a defensive midfielder. Has all the attributes to become a world class DM imo.
