Liverpool: Reds ‘tracking’ Ansu Fati

Liverpool are reportedly ‘tracking’ FC Barcelona winger Ansu Fati ahead of a potential move this summer.

The Lowdown: Out of favour

Fati is currently out of favour at Barcelona, having started just 10 games in total over all competitions so far this season.

The 20-year-old first broke onto the scene as a teenager, playing 33 matches in the 2019/20 term as he scored eight goals and made one assist, with one of those goals coming in the UEFA Champions League (Transfermarkt).

He has since gone on to win seven caps for Spain, and still promises to be an exciting prospect for the future.

The Latest: Liverpool ‘tracking’ Fati

Taking to Twitter, journalist Fabrizio Romano says that the Reds are ‘well informed’ of Fati’s situation at Barca, and are ‘tracking’ him ahead of a potential summer move:

“Premier League clubs, tracking Ansu Fati situation for next summer. Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool well informed.

“Bayern, currently not working on it.

“Barcelona insist they want to keep Ansu — second part of the season will be crucial.”

The Verdict: Prioritise midfield!

With three central midfielders all out of contract this summer, and Arthur Melo also set to leave after his loan spell, the Anfield outfit should be prioritising strengthening in the middle of the park before thinking about bringing in another winger.

Jurgen Klopp already has four wingers in his senior squad at his disposal, and so the summer does not seem to be the right time to buy Fati.

The Spaniard is also protected by a massive €1bn (£885m) release clause, so may not be easy to prize away from Barcelona.

Lauded as a ‘spectacular asset‘ by manager Xavi upon discussing his future recently, and described by his team-mate Eric Garcia as someone who was ‘born with magic‘, Fati certainly has a bright future, but now is not the time for the Merseysiders to sign him.
