On Monday, Arsenal took to Twitter to let the fans know that it was exactly five years to the day that Mesut Ozil scored his first goal for the club, a lovely strike against Napoli in the Champions League group stages. The German’s strike against the Italians was the first of the 40 goals that he’s bagged so far as an Arsenal player.

Mesut Ozil is one of the most talented players in the Premier League and Arsenal are lucky to have him. It’s true that the German has come under criticism in the past for lacking work ethic and ‘going missing’ in big games, but when he’s on song he’s nearly unstoppable and the Gunners will be keen to see more of that Mesut Ozil, like they saw on that night against Napoli back in the 2013/14 season.
Ozil will always be viewed as a creator over a goalscorer and his stats live up to that too. In his time at The Emirates, he’s bagged an impressive 71 assists in his 203 games under Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery, going at a rate of just under an assist every three games he plays for the club. That record will be one he’s keen to continue and the fans will be desperate to see more goals and assists from the 29-year-old star.
You can read The Gunners’ verdict on Ozil here:
5 years later he’s on the back of 3 goals in 4 games, the last of which he scored wearing the captain’s armband.
