Arsenal are reportedly 'looking' at a potential move for Everton central midfielder Amadou Onana.

The Lowdown: Defensive midfield cover needed

While the Gunners will be happy with the transfer business that they have done so far in the January window, signing both Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior, they may feel as if other areas of the pitch still need strengthening.

Defensive midfield cover is one area that's they could look at, as Mohamed Elneny has picked up an injury which has ruled him out of the last injury-prone in the past.

Nonetheless, they have shown already that if there is an opportunity in the market, they will look to take it, so this week could be another busy one for the league leaders.

The Latest: Onana interest

Taking to Twitter on Monday evening, Belgian football journalist Sacha Tavolieri has shared that Mikel Arteta's team are 'looking' for a player in the profile of Onana, but could face competition from both Newcastle United and Chelsea for his signature:

"Initially unthinkable, the departure of Frank #Lampard coupled with the urgent cash needs at #EvertonFC opens the door to a departure from Amadou #Onana this winter. #ChelseaFC & #ArsenalFC who are looking for a similar profile + #NUFC shown their interest. To be continued."

The Verdict: Wait until summer?

It has been reported that Arsenal are interested in a summer move for West Ham United and England star Declan Rice, and so could wait until the next transfer window to splash the cash on him instead.

New signing Kiwior can also fill in at defensive midfield if needed, on top of the players that Arteta already has at his disposal.

Nonetheless, Onana could be a good stopgap signing until the summer comes, as the six-foot-five colossus ranks in the 92nd percentile for tackles, 89th for non penalty xG and 88th for aerials won per match of all midfielders in Europe's top leagues over the last year (FBRef), and of course gaining Premier League experience under his belt this season.

This will no doubt be an interesting decision for the board to make, as they decide how much money that they are willing to spend in this window in order to help push for the Premier League title, with incidentally Onana's team Everton Arsenal's next top-flight fixture.
