Arsenal FC History

Arsenal, originally known as Dial Square, were founded in late 1886, and the team was first formed by the workers from the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory. The Gunners are also known as ‘The Invincibles’ for their Premier League record of going 49 games unbeaten between 2003 and 2004, winning 36. During this period, manager Arsene Wenger led the club to an undefeated league season as they clinched the one-of-a-kind golden Premier League trophy which no other club has earnt. This was their 13th, and latest English first division championship

As well as this great achievement, Arsenal also hold the record for the most FA Cup wins – 13. Their latest triumph was in 2017, and they last won the double in 2014 and 2015.

Thierry Henry holds the club record for most goals – 228 in 377 (175 in Premier League). This is closely followed by another Arsenal legend, Ian Wright who scored 185 goals for the Gunners in early years. David O’Leary holds the record for the most overall club appearances.

Arsenal and Spurs have one of the greatest Premier League rivalries in history. Between 2000 and 2009, the Gunners went 20 consecutive league games unbeaten against Spurs in The North London Derby – get the latest North London Derby updates here.

Arsenal Stadium, known by its original name of Highbury, was the Gunners’ home from 1913 until 2006, this is when the club moved to the Emirates Stadium which is their current home of football – keep updated with daily news coming from the Emirates.

Over the past few years, Arsenal have struggled to find their form in all competitions. On the 29th November 2019, Manager Unai Emery was sacked just after one year in charge of the Gunners. The club were on a seven game winless streak across all competitions and were not performing to their usual level in the Premier League, as well as in the Europa League.

Arsenal signed world-class striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018 for a club-record-fee. He soon became vice captain of the club, and is their top goal-scorer of the current squad with 61 goals in just under 100 games. Soon after, Nicolas Pepe became the new club-record signing in 2019, as he joined from Ligue 1 club Lille. The Ivorian has had a bit of a rocky start, but is starting to find his feet with his recent goal-scoring form.
