Manchester United and Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are awarded hopeful news as the Daily Mirror reveals how Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes says it is his “goal” to play in England.
It appears as no shock that United and the Gunners are linked with the same defender as both sides desperately seek defensive reinforcements.
Both Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal are keen on the £14 million World Cup winner and for once it seems as though a solid defender wants a move to England.
Because countless times in the summer, the Red Devils missed out on plenty of defensive targets who were content with staying at their current club, notably Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels.
Elsewhere, the Gunners have always struggled to get deals over the line in the past, having been linked with plenty of ideal targets previously and it came as a welcome relief that Wenger managed to seal a deal for Villarreal’s Gabriel Paulista rather quickly this winter.
Howedes noted: “If I am to leave Schalke one day, I do not want to move clubs within the Bundesliga.
“Schalke is too close to my heart to do so. But a move abroad at a certain time would be worth an experience.
“England would be my goal.”
