Aston Villa: Villans close to signing Ludwig Augustinsson

Aston Villa have reached an agreement to sign Sevilla left-back Ludwig Augustinsson, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Augustinsson profiled

The 28-year-old is primarily a left-back who can also play as a left midfielder.

The Sweden international made the move to Sevilla last summer and has lined out on 27 occasions for the La Liga side after racking up more than 100 appearances for both FC Copenhagen and Werder Bremen earlier in his career.

Renowned football talent spotter Rafael da Cruz previously described Augustinsson as a ‘set-piece specialist’ and a player who ‘has a midfielder’s football brain’, and it looks as if he could be the next player through the door at Villa Park.

The Latest: Agreement reached

Romano took to Twitter on Saturday evening to share news of another prospective Villa transfer. He revealed that an agreement has been reached ahead of a ‘loan move with an option to buy included’.

The transfer expert added that there are still ‘final details’ to be resolved on the player’s side before a move is completed, which would make Augustinsson the club’s fifth senior summer signing.

The Verdict: Smart move

Steven Gerrard has already brought in a left-back since taking over by signing Lucas Digne earlier this year, although he is in need of another following Matt Targett’s permanent move to Newcastle.

Therefore, signing Augustinsson for the season with a view to a permanent transfer appears to be a wise call and a similar move to fellow Sweden international Robin Olsen, who initially came to the club in January.

The 28-year-old has experience in numerous top leagues as well as in European competitions, so he should be able to challenge Digne while also being able to fill in further forward if needed in a possible wing-back or midfield role.
