Chelsea are monitoring the contract situation of Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers ahead of a possible swoop for the player. Rogers has been locked in fresh contract talks at Aston Villa, despite putting pen to paper on a new deal last November.
That deal did not include a release clause, and the Sun reports that Villa are keen to add protections to guarantee a return for the club. Villa have struggled with profit and sustainability rules and are looking to secure profits from some of their most valuable assets.
The 23-year-old England international has a reported value of over £80m and was the subject of interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham in the summer. Villa ultimately priced the player out of a move after finding alternative solutions to raise funds but could be tempted into a sale at a later time.
Chelsea are now circling the player’s situation, with Blues boss Enzo Maresca familiar with the player having worked with him during the pair’s time at Manchester City’s academy. So far there has been no progress on Roger’s new deal with reports indicating the player was keen on a move away.
Chelsea on high alert as Rogers’ new deal stalls

Villa are not under any pressure to insert an exit route into Rogers’ new deal any time soon, but PSR mandates mean they have to cash in on assets if they do not qualify for the Champions League. With Villa’s slow start to the campaign, their road to the Champions League won’t be easy.
Rogers is currently Villa’s most valuable asset ahead of top goal scorer Ollie Watkins who turns 30 later this year. Both were the subject of much speculation this summer with Villa needing to raise funds, but the club made alternate arrangements.
As for Chelsea, the Blues were one of the summer’s biggest spenders after bringing in Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, and Alejandro Garnacho. Despite this, they managed to turn a profit through outgoings and would be well placed to sign Rogers next summer.
