Arsenal have completed a deadline-day departure, with one of their long-term squad players now beginning a permanent chapter in Germany.
After a loan spell that saw him rediscover his form in the Bundesliga, Fabio Vieira has now secured the move he wanted.
Arsenal Confirm Vieira Sale
Fabio Vieira has officially left Arsenal to join Hamburg SV on a permanent basis.
The 26-year-old spent last season on loan with the German club, registering seven goals in 29 appearances and doing enough to convince Hamburg to make his stay permanent.
Vieira originally joined Arsenal from Porto in 2022 in a deal worth £34 million, but opportunities were limited during his time in north London. He made only five Premier League starts for the Gunners, with his final appearance coming more than two seasons ago.
A previous loan spell at Porto also gave Vieira an opportunity to rebuild his confidence before his successful campaign in Germany.
His performances at Hamburg earned praise from teammate Albert Grønbæk, who described Vieira as “outstanding”.
Vieira was clearly delighted to return to a club where he had already established himself, saying: “I’m very happy to be back. I already know the club, the fans, and many of my teammates. It feels great to be a part of it again. I knew from the beginning that there was a possibility for me to come back here. I felt that HSV had made a real effort to bring me back. Now I’m back and can’t wait to get started again.”
Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa was equally pleased to secure the midfielder permanently.
“We all know what we have in Fabio. He was an absolute game-changer for us last season and possesses qualities that add a special dimension to our play. We are all the more pleased that he has clearly committed to our vision, the team, and the entire club,” Costa said.
For Arsenal, the deal represents another opportunity to trim their squad and move on a player who had fallen well down the pecking order at the Emirates.
