Newcastle United could look to strengthen their defensive options after a difficult start to the 2026-27 Premier League season, with the Magpies currently sitting 11th in the table after seven games.
Matthias Jaissle’s side have conceded 14 goals in the league so far, including four in their 4-1 defeat to Coventry City, before suffering another setback with a 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa.
Those results have highlighted Newcastle’s defensive vulnerabilities, with the club needing greater consistency at the back if they are to climb the table and challenge for a higher league finish.
With defensive reinforcements potentially on the agenda, AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori has emerged as a reported target for the Magpies, according to Football Insider.
Newcastle Interested in Fikayo Tomori
Newcastle United are continuing to monitor AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori, according to Football Insider, with the England international reportedly remaining a target for the club.
Pete O’Rourke reports that Newcastle still have a potential move for Tomori firmly on their radar, having been linked with the defender before the start of the current season.
The 28-year-old is approaching the end of his contract at AC Milan, which is due to expire in June 2027. He is therefore expected to become a free agent next summer if he does not agree to fresh terms.
Tomori — once described as a “no-nonsense” defender — has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter this season, with his limited involvement raising further questions about his long-term future at the Italian club.
Despite his current situation, the defender brings considerable experience, having featured regularly for Milan in recent campaigns. He made 37 appearances across all competitions last season and has also accumulated significant experience in Serie A and the Champions League.
His potential availability could attract interest from several Premier League clubs, particularly those looking to strengthen their defensive options without committing to a substantial transfer fee.
For Newcastle, the prospect of signing an experienced centre-back on a free transfer could represent an attractive opportunity.
However, competition for Tomori’s signature is expected if he leaves Milan next summer, meaning the Magpies may need to move decisively should they decide to pursue a deal.
For now, Newcastle’s reported interest remains at the monitoring stage, with no confirmed agreement in place. Much will depend on Tomori’s situation at Milan and whether the club’s recruitment team decides to turn that interest into a concrete move.
