Aston Villa are preparing for their Europa League final against Freiburg on Wednesday to cap off another fantastic season.
The Villans confirmed their spot in next season’s Champions League when they travelled to Anfield on Friday evening and defeated Liverpool 4-2, which will come as a huge relief to Unai Emery.
The race for Champions League qualification has been fiercely competitive for months, with several clubs battling to secure a place among Europe’s elite, and Villa can now turn their full focus towards bringing another European trophy back to Villa Park.
Whether they are successful or not in the Europa League final, the ambitious project at Villa Park will remain an attractive prospect for players when the summer transfer window opens next month.
Champions League football and impressive trophy runs will help Villa attract top talent ahead of next season, and it will be imperative for them to add depth to avoid stagnation while coping with an increasingly congested fixture schedule.
According to Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, Aston Villa are reigniting their interest in Barcelona loanee Marcus Rashford.
The publication claims that the La Liga champions are keen to retain the services of the Manchester United winger, but the Red Devils are looking to sell Rashford to boost funds for squad reinvestment at Old Trafford.
Barcelona have a €30m (£26m) buy-option clause that would need to be activated for Rashford to remain in Spain, though Villa’s interest could complicate negotiations with United.
Should Villa sign Marcus Rashford?
There is no doubt that Rashford has rediscovered his confidence on the pitch since joining Barcelona and has become a key figure in their attacking threat this season.
Over 48 appearances, the 28-year-old forward – once hailed as a “fantastic player” by Hansi Flick – has scored 14 goals and registered 14 assists, averaging a goal contribution every 90 minutes so far this season.
Only Ollie Watkins has scored more goals than Rashford among Villa’s attacking options this season, and if the Manchester United star can replicate his form from Barcelona, he could become an incredible asset for Emery in Villa’s pursuit of success across all competitions.
Of course, Rashford is already familiar with working under Emery after joining Villa on a six-month loan deal in 2025, where he showed flashes of quality with four goals and six assists during his short stint in the Midlands.
With Champions League football secured and another European final on the horizon, Aston Villa are entering one of the most important summers of their project.
Rashford has already demonstrated that he can thrive in Villa’s system, while his resurgence in Spain has only strengthened the case for a permanent move.
If Villa can agree a reasonable deal with Manchester United and fend off competition from Barcelona, they could secure a proven match-winner capable of taking their attacking threat to another level ahead of a demanding campaign on multiple fronts.
