Aston Villa are looking to sign a new left-sided centre-back, casting doubt over Tyrone Mings’ future, according to a new transfer rumour.
The Lowdown: Tough time for Mings
The 29-year-old has generally been a popular player at Villa Park, captaining the team and getting into the England squad for Euro 2020 because of his performances at club level.
Mings has been going through a tougher period recently, however, losing the captaincy to John McGinn and making a number of errors already this season.
With Unai Emery now coming in as Villa’s new manager, it looks as though the Spaniard may also not rate the Englishman highly.
The Latest: Villa look for possible replacement
According to Football Insider reporter Wayne Veysey, NSWE are looking to sign a centre-back in Mings’ left-sided role, suggesting he isn’t considered a key figure moving forward.
Villa are thought to be ‘in the market’ for that type of defender, with the reports also saying there is ‘new doubt’ over Mings’ future.
The Verdict: Is he good enough?
While Mings has performed well at times for Villa, there is an increasing feeling that he is an error-strewn centre-back who can be improved upon at Villa Park.
Should Villa move for Conor Gallagher?
On his day, the England international can be colossal – he was recently hailed as ‘fantastic’ by Steven Gerrard – but it does feel as though a mistake is often around the corner at the moment.
Emery knows how to build a well-drilled defensive team, so if he feels Mings isn’t good enough to be starting regularly, he should be trusted to bring in his own superior replacement.
