Luis Suarez would 'definitely' be interested in joining Aston Villa this summer, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

The Athletic's Gregg Evans recently reported that Villa manager Steven Gerrard will monitor the situation of his former Liverpool team-mate ahead of the summer transfer window.

The expectation is that Suarez will leave Atletico Madrid at the end of the season when his contract expires.

The Uruguayan has fallen out of favour under Diego Simeone, starting just two of his team's last seven La Liga matches and watching on from the sidelines for both legs of the recent Champions League round of 16 tie against Manchester United.

The latest

Jones is confident that the move would appeal to Suarez as he finds himself starved of playing time at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: "Given the situation that Suarez is in, I think it's something that would definitely interest him," he said.

The verdict

Another standout factor with this transfer link is the existing relationship between Gerrard and Suarez from their mutual time at Liverpool. When the former announced his retirement from football in the autumn of 2016, the Uruguayan said that he had been like 'an older brother' during his stint at Anfield.

Suarez may be 35, but his record is still impressive. The £9m-rated forward has scored 11 goals this season (one every 180 minutes, or two full games) and also laid on three assists.

As recently as last year, he made the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon D'Or award, but one concern might be the competition that he would face in Gerrard's squad.

Villa have shelled out a combined £57.1m on Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins, and their statistics suggest both of them may prove better suited to a pressing game than an ageing Suarez.
