Aston Villa sent club officials to watch Rangers defender Calvin Bassey on Saturday ahead of a possible summer move.

The Lowdown: Bassey linked with Villa

A left-back who can also turn out at centre-back, Bassey appears to be next on Steven Gerrard’s radar after the club secured a permanent move for Phillipe Coutinho earlier this month and also seem to be closing in on Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

Reliable reporter John Percy recently stated that Villa are considering a move for the 22-year-old, who has starred at Ibrox this season. The Nigeria international made a whopping 50 appearances in all competitions in 2021/22 and caught the eye during the Europa League final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in midweek.

The Latest: Villa staff watch Bassey

The Daily Record’s Scott Burns shared an update regarding Bassey and Villa late on Friday evening.

He stated that Villa would have officials in attendance at Hampden Park for the Scottish Cup final to watch Bassey in action, with Gerrard keen to sign the player that he brought to Scotland back in 2020.

The Verdict: They'll have been impressed

Rangers put their Europa League heartbreak behind them to lift the Scottish Cup on Saturday, beating Hearts 2-0 after extra time.

Bassey once again impressed, earning a 9/10 match rating, with journalist Colin Duncan stating that the defender is ‘fast becoming’ the club's ‘most important and influential player’.

You'd expect that Villa officials would have been impressed after ‘a monster of a performance’ from the versatile defender, so it wouldn’t come as a shock if NSWE got the chequebook out over the coming weeks.
