Barcelona's director of football Mateu Alemany has turned down a move to Aston Villa, according to journalist Luis Rojo.

The Lowdown: Off-field rumours

Christian Purslow is expecting an extremely busy transfer window at Villa Park this summer, with rumours regarding an off-field move at the club emerging in recent days.

Reports suggested that Villa have held discussions with sporting director Antonio Cordon after he left Real Betis, although Ashley Preece has said that Johan Lange’s position in the Midlands is untroubled.

Alemany appears to be another director of interest to NSWE, and it looks as if Villa have made their move.

The Latest: Rojo’s post

Rojo, who contributes for Marca, took to Twitter on Monday evening to share an update on Alemany.

He said that the 60-year-old, who is out of contract at Barcelona in the summer, ‘has rejected an offer from Aston Villa to be Sports Director’.

The Verdict: Blow for NSWE

Villa owners NSWE must have wanted to bring Alemany to the Midlands after offering terms to the Spaniard, so this update may come as a blow for the Midlands club.

However, NSWE and Purslow ‘rate’ the work that Lange has done, so it is reassuring to know that he will continue to remain at Bodymoor Heath and may already be planning for the future.

Another director of football to potentially work alongside Lange seems to be on the club’s radar after links to Cordon and Alemany, so it could be a situation to keep an eye upon over the coming months.
