The Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are reacting to the news that manager, Jose Mourinho, could be on the verge of signing a new contract extension at Old Trafford.

Our regulars in the bar have been long discussing the news breaking that Mourinho is set to extend his stay.  Indeed, many of them believed that his time would be up within the next 12 months, as the Portuguese has a tendency to not stick around longer than three years at any of his previous clubs.

However, the board seem to be backing Mourinho in the transfer market and his style of management, where he seems to have brought back a winning mentality back to the club, looks suited to United in their current state. This season is by far the best season the Red Devils have had since Sir Alex Ferguson retired despite winning two major trophies last season, much to the delight of our punters.

However, our landlord believes that this could be a terrible decision for the club to take and here are his TWO reasons why…

More money

Mourinho, over the festive period, goaded the board, in terms of their spend in the transfer market compared to their rivals. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach has already spent £300m+ in his 18 months in charge, and if the Portuguese is to continue on his current spending spree, it’s going to cost the Old Trafford hierarchy a hell of a lot more money to back him.

Moreover, our punters think that by the United board citing that they need to balance the books this window it seems like an expensive long-term deal.

Disgruntled fans

Many United fans in the bar, even though Mourinho has brought them a glut of trophies in his first season, including one that’s never been won before, are not happy with the lack of identity the team has.

Many games against the top teams have warranted a park the bus mentality and this is not making for a good showing on the Old Trafford stands. If Mourinho is to continue and surpass his standard three years in charge, he has to bring a flavour of football that coincides with what United’s history is about.
