Barnsley Record Transfers

The Tykes are not a big money spending club by any means, and this is backed up by their highest ever transfer record arrival fee. Gjorghi Hristov arrived from Partizan all the way back in 1997-98, for a then massive fee of £2.03m.

The 21-year-old North Macedonian international arrived with high expectations before moving on to NEC Nijmegen for free, just three years later. This large sum has yet to be beaten by the Championship side, and it is followed by trio; Ashley Ward, Iain Hume, and Andy Gray who all arrived in the region of £1.60m over the past two decades.

The tykes most recent large transfer fee came ahead of the 2019-20 season, when centre-forward Patrick Schmidt arrived from the Austrian Bundesliga side, Admira Wacker for £1.08m. In the same season, 20-year-old Derby star, Luke Thomas was brought in for £1.22m, making him the most expensive Barnsley player in the past decade.

Moving on to record transfer departures, the Tykes have made a name for themselves, notably offloading England international, John Stones to Everton back in 2012-13 for just over £3m. It is thought that Barnsley also received almost £10m in transfer fees for the centre-back due to the sell-on clause which was added to his contract upon departure.

Despite this large sell-on fee, Ashley Ward was the Tykes record departure, as they received a great fee of £5.66m back in 1998-99 from Blackburn Rovers. Notably, Alfie Mawson was sold in 2016-17 to Swansea City for £5.31m, and he soon after made a name for himself playing for the Swans in the Premier League.

Famous Barnsley Transfers

Mason Holgate is definitely one of the clubs most famous transfers, who sometimes goes off the transfer radar. As a product of Barnsley FC’s youth academy and U18’s team, the young English star signed for Everton for £1.26m in 2015-16. The future prospect left Barnsley at the age of 18 for a small fee, and he has gone on to make a name for himself as a regular Everton starter.

Another footballer who has made a name for himself on and off the pitch, and someone who was a fan favourite, was former Arsenal star, Emmanuel Frimpong who left the North London club for just £225k. This was Burnley’s greatest bit of business as at the time, the Ghanain international had a market value of £1.80m.

Barnsley star, Christoph Knasmüllner also arrived for a low half a million fee, and was thought to be worth almost £1.80m at the time also – get more of the latest Barnsley transfer rumours here!
