When Christian Benteke signed for Liverpool, the Reds in the Football Transfer Tavern were absolutely delighted…
The ex-Aston Villa man had saved the Villains from relegation seemingly on his own a number of times, and it seemed inevitable that he would become a hit at a top club in the Premier League.
However, as has so often been the case with Liverpool in recent years, their big money attacking signing just didn’t get going at Anfield – and like Mario Balotelli before him, the club were soon faced with the prospect of wanting to sell the disappointing Belgian.
Over the summer, a move to Crystal Palace became available – and Christian Benteke appeared to jump at the chance. Now, a few months later – he has revealed the reasons behind the move.
According to L’Equipe, when questioned on the move, Benteke said: “When Klopp came, compared to the players at his disposal, I was not in his first choice.”
He continued: “You can not afford to give up, to remain in a situation of “loser”, so you find a solution to be happy. I found myself coming to Crystal Palace and I’m happy today”.
Our landlord thinks that most players would have been content to play a bit-part role at Liverpool over moving to Palace, so he thinks that Benteke should be commended for his decision to move to London.
Benteke was with Liverpool for just 1 season, and in that year he made just 14 Premier League starts, with 15 appearances from the bench. He scored just 9 goals in the process.
This is contrasted to his Palace form, with the Belgian making 14 appearances – with 8 goals in the bag already.
The Crystal Palace fans are backing him for the golden boot this season…
