Blackburn Rovers History

Blackburn Rovers was formed in 1875 following a meeting on November 5th in the St. Leger Hotel on King William Street. The meeting was organised by two old boys of Shrewsbury school, John Lewis and Arthur Constantine, and the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibility of forming a football club to play under Association rules – 17 people attended.

Unlike many clubs, Blackburn Rovers have managed to win the FA Cup on six occasions, making them the joint-fifth highest winners of the domestic trophy. Their success with the FA Cup began in 1883-84, and this was the start of something historic. A hat-trick of FA Cup victories was achieved in 1885-86 when Rovers retained the trophy for a third time following a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich in the final. This soon was followed by professionalisation as a football club after the FA had accepted the request.

Rovers first league game took place on 15th September 1888 when they shared an incredible five goals in an exciting thriller with Accrington. Blackburn still saw the FA Cup as a priority, however, and once again in the 1889-90 season, Rovers reached the final and defeated Sheffield Wednesday by a whopping six goals to one. Rovers regained the Cup the following season, and one it once more in 1927-28 – you do not want to miss out on more Blackburn Rovers news.

Before World War I, Blackburn Rovers were seen as the best team in the country. At the end of the 1911-12 season, Rovers managed to lift the Division One (now Premier League) championship at Ewood park, for the first time in their history. Their season began with two defeats in their first three games, and this turned around when George Chapman began playing at centre-forward, scoring in nine successive games.

Rovers then went undefeated for three months until finally defeating West Bromwich 4-1 at the end of the season to lift the prestigious trophy. Success did not stop there, just two seasons later, Blackburn won the Division One title once again with four games still to go – stay up to date with breaking news from Ewood Park here!

Blackburn Rovers were part of the inaugural Premier League in 1992, and in just their second season they finished as runners-up before clinching the title in 1994-94. This incredible achievement will be remembered by many and their name will be written in Premier League history forever. Soon after in 2002, Rovers defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at the Millennium Stadium to claim their first-ever League Cup trophy and remained in the Premier League until 2011-12.

Since then, Rovers have struggled to regain their Premier League status and even had a blip in League One, in 2017-18.
