Blackburn Rovers are an English team with a great history and many great players over the years. The record transfer arrival fee still stands from 2001-02, when Andy Cole notably joined Rovers from Manchester United for almost £11m. This was a lot of money back then and this record has not been broken in 20 years.
The 30-year-old former England international only played for Blackburn for two seasons before he was let go for free to Fulham in 2004. His highest ever market value was only around £7.20m, though his winning goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup final secured his place in Rovers history books.
One of the strangest transfers of all time and a definite flop which Blackburn would not like to look back on is Corrado Grabbi. The 25-year-old Italien signed for Blackburn in 2001-02, from now Serie B team, Terana for £10.23m which is just under Andy Coles record fee.
After this big-money move, fans expected wonders from the centre-forwards; however, over three years he only managed to rack up 30 appearances for Rovers, and even had a loan spell straight after signing. Grabbi was subject to a series of injuries and personal reasons which did not help him reach his full potential, and subsequently, he scored just one goal in fourteen league games. Another signing made before the start of the new millennium was Kevin Davies, who signed for £10.13m from Southampton, and despite big money, once again he was seen as a failed signing with just 23 Rovers appearances to his name.
As for departing players, Blackburn Rovers can hold their head up high with large transfer fees received from other clubs. Damien Duff is Rovers record received transfer fee, in 2003-04 the Republic of Ireland international joined Chelsea for just over £22m.
A few years later in 2008-09, David Bentley was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for just under £20m, though the winger suffered with many injuries throughout his career. Another Blackburn star, Roque Santa Cruz managed to earn Rovers a massive £19.08m for his transfer to Manchester City in 2009-10, and Manchester United centre-back joined from Blackburn all the way back in 2011-12 for a respectable £17.37m fee.
One man tops the list for the greatest Blackburn signing of all-time – England legend, Alan Shearer. The prolific centre-forward joined from Southampton in 1992 for just £4.05m, and after shining for Rovers, four years later he joined Newcastle United for just under £19m.
