Blackpool History

Blackpool FC was founded in 1887 by former students of St John’s School, two years later however, the other football club in town, South Shore FC, was merged into Blackpool. After missing out on application for the Football League, the Seasiders were elected to join the Second Division for the 1896-97 season, and after being finally winning the division championship in the 1929-30 season, they were promoted to the top flight for the first time in the clubs history. 20 years later they won their first FA Cup in 1953, an iconic moment for the club.

Unlike many other lower league clubs in English football, Blackpool FC managed to reach the prestigious Premier League in the 2010-11 season. The Seasiders made their Premier League debut after winning the 2009-10 Championship play-off final in what was their 99th consecutive season in the Football League. It was also their 28th overall season in English football’s top tier after spending just three seasons in the Championship before promotion. Despite this incredible achievement, Blackpool were sadly relegated back to the Championship just after one season in the Premier League. They finished 19th with a low 39 points. They nearly regained their position in the top flight the season after; however, narrowly missed out on the play-off finals. After four years of battling in the Championship, Blackpool faced three consecutive relegations and were relegated back down to League Two in 2016-17. This did not last long however, they battled their way back up to League One where they are currently just out of reach of the play-offs but will remain hopeful. Blackpool have recently appointed Neil Critchley as their new head coach, and this gives the League One side a lot of promise. The former Liverpool Under-23s coach was known for his successful efforts in managing Liverpool FC’s first team twice this season, notably for his 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round replay win over Shrewsbury. He is one of only 16 coaches in the country to have gained the highest possible qualification in the game, and is known for his work with youth players.
