The Bantams are fairly fresh in League Two, to be fair, but their very first season down in the fourth tier of English football hasn’t really been that successful.
Once, however, Bradford were playing with the big boys in the Premier League and back then, their financial situation was much better. Because of that, it doesn’t really come as a big surprise that all of their biggest transfers actually happened back in the late ‘90s and at the beginning of the new Millenium.
To be more precise, it was in the 2000/01 campaign when they penned a deal with the now-retired Ashley Ward who arrived from Blackburn Rovers for a reported fee of £1.8m, matching the previous top dog, David Wetherall. Interestingly, his transfer from Leeds United a couple of years before that was done for the very same price.
But in that same window, Bradford would also acquire another record-breaking signing, this time snatching David Hopkin away from, again, Leeds for £3.3m. That is still the biggest transfer they have done in the whole history of the club.
Interestingly, during those years, The Bantams also sold some players for big sums too. In 2000/01 they moved Andrew O’Brien to Newcastle United for a huge fee of £2.7m, matching Derrick Hamilton’s transfer in every aspect – they both went to the Magpies and, even more intriguing, both commanded the same price tag.
The late Dean Richards is in third place for his £2.4m move to Wolves back in the 1994/95 campaign.
There are not too many more famous Bradford City moves than the one of their boss, Stuart McCall. The current gaffer enjoyed two big spells with the Bantams when he was younger, having both started his career there and then returning back home later on. It goes without saying that Bradford’s favourite son taking over as manager has been an incredible piece of news for the club.
We can also mention Gary Jones’ arrival, even though it wasn’t that big at first. He was 35 at the time and his transfer wasn’t really something to get the fans on their feet. But by the time he was transferred to Notts County, Jones was already an icon. Not many expected it but most mourned his departure in the end.
And of course, we simply have to include both Hopkin and Ward since they did muster such big transfer fees for the club.
