Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey has been called into England’s under-21 squad for their upcoming fixtures.
As per Brighton & Hove Independent, the 19-year-old received the call-up from Aidy Boothroyd after former Chelsea team-mate Reece James withdrew from the national squad ahead of their Euro 2021 qualifying double header against Kosovo and Austria.
The Seagulls teenager has previously represented England at under-18, 19 and 20 level but has yet to play for his country’s under-21 side (as per TransferMarkt).
Lamptey has enjoyed a remarkable rise during 2020, having played just three first team games for Chelsea before moving to Brighton in January. He had to wait until after the lockdown for his Seagulls debut but has not looked back since, holding down a regular place in Graham Potter’s line-up towards the end of last season (as per TransferMarkt).
He was voted the club’s Man of the Match after his debut in the 0-0 draw at Leicester in June, with Potter describing his performance that day as “outstanding” as the teenager also drew praise from Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.
Do you think Tariq Lamptey is a future England international?
Lamptey, who completed more dribbles and interceptions per game in 2019/20 than any other Brighton player (as per WhoScored), is now a firm first choice at right-back in the Seagulls’ squad. Indeed, such is the club’s faith in him that they sanctioned the departures of two players in that position over the summer, with Ezequiel Schelotto being released and Martin Montoya joining Real Betis.
The 19-year-old featured for 45 minutes in the 1-1 friendly draw against his former club last Saturday and will soon do battle with Frank Lampard’s side again as the teams face each other at the Amex Stadium on Monday week in the opening round of the new Premier League season.
Lamptey’s call-up to the England under-21 squad highlights just how impressive he has been in recent months, going from being a peripheral figure at Chelsea to Brighton’s undisputed first-choice right-back.
If the 19-year-old features for Boothroyd’s side in the next few days and makes as much of an impression as he did on his Seagulls debut, it should stand him in very good stead for what is set to be his first full season as a Premier League player.
