Brighton & Hove Albion: Lewis Dunk “95 per cent” likely to stay despite short odds on Chelsea move - Brighton Transfer Rumours

A source for media outlet The Argus has claimed that there is a “95 per cent chance” of Lewis Dunk remaining at Brighton next season, despite continuing rumours over a potential move to Chelsea.

According to The Argus, some bookmakers are offering short odds on the 28-year-old joining the west Londoners, with the defender being an ardent Blues fan and recently being linked with Frank Lampard’s side (as per Football Insider).

The Argus added that Chelsea may need to pay as much as £45m if they are to persuade Brighton to allow the defender to leave for Stamford Bridge.

With 36 Premier League starts, Dunk featured more than any other outfield player at Brighton last season, while his three-goal tally in the division was bettered by only two team-mates despite him playing as a centre-back. [via WhoScored]

The captain had the highest passing accuracy rate among the Seagulls’ squad in 2019/20 with 87%, with match averages of 2.8 headers won, 1.5 interceptions and 3.4 clearances also serving to highlight his important to Brighton’s cause.

What club had Hughton most recently managed before taking the Brighton job?

However, as a Chelsea supporter, he will likely be aware that Lampard is reportedly planning an overhaul of his defensive options in the summer transfer window, as per The Times (via The Mirror). Therefore, this could prove an ideal opportunity for him to join the Blues.

Also, Stamford Bridge will be a Champions League venue again next season, while this may be Dunk’s last realistic chance of signing for them as he will turn 29 in November and is quite possibly in the peak of his career now.

There seems to be conflicting messages on the likelihood of Dunk making the move to Chelsea, with media sources seemingly pouring cold water on the move and some bookmakers offering odds to suggest that it is a discernible possibility.

What is far more certain is that the Brighton captain would be a hard man to replace, with his statistics for 2019/20 illustrating his importance to the cause, and the Amex Stadium faithful will surely hope that he is happy to stay put despite the lure of the west London lights.
