Brighton & Hove Albion: Odsonne Edouard would cost the Seagulls £40m or more - Brighton Transfer Rumours

Brighton have discovered how much they would need to pay if they are to sign reported transfer target Odsonne Edouard.

Sussex Live reported that Celtic have slapped a price tag of £40m on the French striker, with Arsenal and Leicester also among the Premier League clubs with a reported interest in the 22-year-old.

As per Sussex Live, the Hoops’ latest failure to reach the Champions League group stages could lead to the forward contemplating his situation at Parkhead.

Edouard, who was previously on Paris Saint-Germain’s books and played for their youth team but never made a senior appearance, has been a revelation since moving to Celtic three years ago, going on to score 64 goals in 130 matches for the Scottish champions.

After scoring 27 goals last term, including 21 league goals and five in their Europa League campaign, he has netted four goals in as many matches in the early weeks of the current season, although he was a notable omission from the Hoops’ last two fixtures.

Chris Hughton

What club had Hughton most recently managed before taking the Brighton job?

Brighton manager Graham Potter is firmly on the lookout for a new striker in the current transfer window, with the Seagulls also being linked with moves for £13.5m-rated Reims marksman Boulaye Dia (A Bola via HITC) and Almeria’s Darwin Nunez, who is valued at £23m (The Argus).

While those two options should cost far less than Edouard, the Celtic striker has prior experience of British football, along with playing in both of Europe’s main club competitions. However, Dia has a decent track record in Ligue 1, which is higher than the Scottish Premiership in UEFA’s association club coefficient.

Edouard’s goal record at Celtic is indisputably excellent, as is his return of 11 goals in six caps for the French under-21 side, but Brighton still need to consider whether they can justify paying £40m or more for him.

It would involve them at least doubling their current joint-record transfer outlay of £20m, paid for the respective acquisitions of Neal Maupay and Adam Webster (as per TransferMarkt); and at a time when the global pandemic has impacted on clubs’ finances, the Seagulls might not have the reserves to meet Celtic’s asking price.

Should Brighton consider paying £40m for Odsonne Edouard?

Also, with Maupay proving a reliable scorer at Premier League level and Aaron Connolly emerging last season, Edouard fits the category of ‘nice to have’ rather than ‘must-have’ at Brighton.
