Brighton are set to loan out Percy Tau yet again, despite the South Africa striker still awaiting his Seagulls debut two years after joining the club.
The print edition of Belgian media outlet Het Belang van Limburg reported [via Sport Witness] that the 26-year-old is soon expected to join Anderlecht on loan, with the option of a permanent deal, with the Brussels-based club set to hold interviews with the player in order to bring the deal closer to fruition.
As noted by Sport Witness, the striker will not be part of Brighton’s plans next season as he has been unable to obtain a work permit to play in the Premier League.
Tau was signed for Brighton by Chris Hughton two years ago this week but, due to the lack of a UK work permit, he was immediately loaned out to Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian second tier, where he scored 13 goals and set up another 13 in 35 appearances (as per TransferMarkt).
He also spent last season on loan in Belgium, this time with Club Brugge, for whom he featured in the Champions League and scored four times in 30 games as he helped them to win the league title.
The 26-year-old still hasn’t played competitively for Brighton, though, and hasn’t been able to obtain a Premier League work permit despite being a South Africa international who played for them at last year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
However, with a player’s country needing to be in the top 70 of FIFA’s World Rankings when averaged over a two-year period at the time of application, Tau’s homeland falls short in this regard, as 71st-placed South Africa have not met this criterion since 2016 (as per FIFA.com).
The waiting game goes on for Tau at Brighton, who are powerless to give the South African his chance at the Amex Stadium due to issues outside of their control.
Do you think Percy Tau will ever feature for Brighton?
With another year passing by in which the 26-year-old cannot play for his parent club, and with Anderlecht having the option to make his impending loan permanent, the Seagulls faithful may well be wondering if they will ever get to see the striker represent their club.
Brighton fans, are you disappointed that Tau has not yet had the chance to play for the Seagulls? Comment below with your views!
