Brighton are reportedly prepared to submit a transfer offer for Almeria and Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez.
Spanish media outlet La Voz de Almería reported [via Sport Witness] that the Seagulls, along with Sheffield United, have shown an interest in the 20-year-old and are prepared to offer roughly €15m (£13.5m) for the player. However, the Segunda Division outfit value him at €20m (£18m).
Nunez has impressed in the Spanish second tier during the 2019/20 season, scoring 16 goals in 30 games for Almeria and helping them to reach the play-offs, from which they could yet be promoted to the top flight.
He also made an instant impact on his senior debut for Uruguay, scoring within five minutes of coming off the bench against Peru last October (as per TransferMarkt).
Brighton have previously enjoyed success with signings from second-tier leagues, having spent £20m on Neal Maupay from Brentford last year and seen him hit double figures in the Premier League in 2019/20.
However, unlike the Frenchman, Nunez has yet to prove that he can be a consistent scorer over multiple seasons. He had netted just four times in 22 games for Penarol in his homeland prior to his move to Europe, so there could justifiably be question marks as to whether he would have the same impact as Maupay at the Amex Stadium.
Also, a fee of £18m seems rather hefty for a striker who, while admittedly enjoying a very good season, is still unproven in a major European league. Nunez still has ample time to develop during his career given that he is only 20, although in a transfer market where clubs’ finances are set to be blighted by the global pandemic, £18m looks steep for a player who still has plenty to prove.
