With Manchester United travelling to take on Liverpool in the Fourth Round of The FA Cup this weekend, FATV took a trip north to Old Trafford last week to chat with United legend Bryan Robson, who has good memories of this particular fixture.
In 1985, when Robson enjoyed the second of his three FA Cup successes with the Reds, the north-west giants met at the Semi-Final stage and after drawing the first game 2-2 at Goodison Park, it was back to Manchester and Maine Road for the replay.
And after going behind to John Wark’s opener, Robson got United back level in the second half before Mark Hughes notched the winner to send them into The Final against Everton.
“The atmosphere at Maine Road was great, but it was a bad start for us against a Liverpool team who were dominant at the time,” recalled Robson.
“I always enjoyed playing at Maine Road though, because to me it always seemed to be a big pitch. I don’t actually know whether it was.
“For the United fans, it was extra special because Liverpool had gone in front and it was extra special for us because we came back and I was fortunate enough to score.”
Robson rates his strike in the game as one of his greatest and after watching it again, added: “It was one of the best goals I ever scored for United.
“It was a great moment with the fans all mobbing me at the end.”
