Unsung Hero: James Tarkowski had one massive moment in Burnley’s win over Watford - Burnley News

Burnley shrugged off their thumping by Manchester City earlier in the week to defeat Watford 1-0 at Turf Moor yesterday evening and move back up to 11th.

Jay Rodriguez netted the only goal of the game on 73 minutes when he got his head to Dwight McNeil‘s cross and nodded the ball past Ben Foster for the decisive moment of the match.

Amid a backdrop of questions over Sean Dyche’s future at the club, the Clarets delivered the perfect response and, in particular, one of their experienced heads produced an outstanding display for the team.

What position did Burnley occupy in the table after the first round of matches, having beaten Southampton 3-0?

James Tarkowski, ever-present in Burnley’s current Premier League season and with 136 appearances and counting for the club, was a rock at the back and made one particular contribution which was almost as important as Rodriguez’s goal in the victory.

Shortly after the hour mark with the deadlock still to be broken, he produced a perfectly-timed tackle to thwart Danny Welbeck when the Hornets striker looked set to score after clever link-up with Troy Deeney, an exceptional piece of defending which ultimately proved a pivotal contribution on the overall context of the match.

That moment was the highlight of an overall tremendous defensive performance from the 27-year-old. As per Sofascore, he won no fewer than 14 duels against Watford, including 11 aerial duels, along with making five clearances and two successful tackles. Four accurate long balls can also be factored into his stellar figures from the evening.

Some of the reporters on duty at the match rightfully commended Tarkowski’s performance. Alex James of Lancashire Live said that he was “commanding in the air and showed a neat touch or two in possession”, adding that he “handled Deeney well” and that his “goal-saving tackle on Welbeck was outstanding”.

In the Burnley Express, Dan Black lauded “a masterclass in defending from the centre-back, who needed to be on top of his game as Watford asked questions of the Clarets after the break”.

Burnley’s Thursday evening win was the perfect riposte to a difficult week for the club and Tarkowski can feel very proud of the performance he gave in helping his team to a timely victory.
