Burnley winger Dwight McNeil is reportedly attracting transfer interest from a number of clubs in the Premier League and Serie A, including some of the biggest names in those leagues.
According to Burnley Express, up to seven English top-flight clubs are interested in the 20-year-old, including 2019 champions Manchester City, Leicester and Wolves, with Italian champions Juventus also having him on their transfer wish-list along with AC Milan.
A source told Burnley Express that “there are conversations ongoing” with regards to McNeil’s future, adding that “there’s always going to be interest” given how he has performed at Turf Moor.
The winger, who is valued at £22.5m by TransferMarkt, started every Premier League game for the Clarets in 2019/20, although his end-of-season return of two goals and six assists appears modest given his constant presence in the starting line-up.
However, he was still a vital creative presence for Burnley, with his assists tally the joint-highest among Sean Dyche’s squad for the season. Therefore, while the number might not appear outstanding in isolation, his creativity relative to that of his team-mates demonstrates how heavily the front men rely on him to produce chances from the flanks.
Also, the left wing position is not one in which the Clarets are overflowing with viable options. Robbie Brady, McNeil’s most obvious understudy, has had substantial injury problems in recent months, while left-back Erik Pieters has been forced to deputise in a more advanced role towards the latter weeks of the campaign when other players were injured.
Burnley have already had to contend with transfer reports linking McNeil with the likes of Manchester United and Everton, so it should come as no great surprise that a clutch of other teams now seem to have shown an interest in him.
The burning question is whether they can persuade him that his future is best served at Turf Moor, with the youngster’s head quite possibly open to being turned by regular Champions League participants like Manchester City and Juventus.
