There appears to be no end in sight for Liverpool and the targets they are looking to acquire this summer. Manager Kenny Dalglish is set to further reinvest in the squad this summer however Roma defender Philippe Mexes would be the cheapest, given the player’s contract is up for renewal at the end of the season.
The Frenchman is refusing to sign a new deal and looks set to leave Roma in the summer. The Italian side look set to lose a host of star names after having a poor season, crashing out of the Champions League to Shakhtar Donetsk and struggling in Serie A sitting 6th.
Mexes has been linked with Liverpool throughout his career and it was rumoured he was making a switch to the Merseyside club under Gerard Houllier but opted for Roma instead. The France international is regarded as one of the most reliable defenders in Serie A, where he has been plying his trade with Roma since 2004.
Kop boss Dalglish wants centre back reinforcements to provide competition for Agger, Skrtel and the ever present Carragher. Kyrgiakos has never been fancied by the Scot and it appears his Anfield day’s maybe numbered.
The top target for Dalglish is Gary Cahill, however due to high interest and Bolton’s reluctance to sell, a fee of £20 million maybe required. While Liverpool now have the cash to offer such a bid, the Glaswegian knows there are other areas that Liverpool are currently short on that need to be addressed.
Given Mexes’s contract situation Liverpool will face competition for his signature, not only from Serie A clubs but also Arsenal and United have been rumoured to be sniffing around.
