In comments recently made on Twitter, Brian McNally, the former Sunday Mirror journalist and self-confessed Celtic fan, claimed that the club’s board’s decision regarding under-fire boss Neil Lennon is ‘hard to comprehend’.
With Celtic having won an astonishing nine consecutive Scottish Premiership titles, Lennon stated at the beginning of the season that the Bhoys can ‘go for 10 now’ and that he was aware that the feat had ‘been on the tip of a lot of our supporters’ tongues’.

However, after a decent start to their 2020/21 campaign, winning eight of their first nine league fixtures, Celtic’s form has since fallen off a cliff, with Lennon’s side picking up just one win over their last five fixtures, leaving them 13 points adrift of their Old Firm rivals in the Premiership table.
And, in recent comments made on Twitter, McNally criticised Peter Lawwell’s decision to award Lennon the job permanently after he had originally taken over on a temporary basis following Brendan Rodgers’ departure from the club mid-season.
He said: “Hard to comprehend how Lawwell saw Lennon as a permanent boss after he left us in 2014 & then when things ended badly for him at Bolton [Wanderers] & [Hibernian]. Celtic should have thanked him for rescuing us after the Rodgers walk-out & replaced him with a top-class manager. Cheapskate option!”

Transfer Tavern Take
While the importance of this season is impossible to underestimate for Celtic and the club’s supporters, it is easy to forget that Lennon has guided the club to five Scottish Premiership titles in two separate spells charge of the Hoops, albeit with Rangers being absent from the top-flight for a number of them.
Having said this, with Celtic essentially having a free run at the league for the years when Rangers toiled in the lower divisions, in our opinion, the Bhoys should have made the league a closed shop, and, as such, we find it difficult to disagree that Celtic should have looked to improve on, rather than simply sustain, their position at the pinnacle of Scottish football, as McNally suggests.
